The Church Street Marketplace

You are here Home  > The Church Street Marketplace >  The Church Street Marketplace

The Church Street Marketplace is the heart of downtown Burlington. It is a short walk from all the hotels downtown. It is an eclectic mix of small outdoor cafes and shops, street vendors and performers on a bricked over street that is now closed to car traffic as a pedestrian mall. See The Church Street Marketplace as one of the nine pillars of Burlington (About Burlington tab) for an interesting history of how the marketplace came to be. Halfway down the four blocks of the marketplace you will find the entrance to the Burlington Town Center Mall, an enclosed climate controlled shopping mall featuring a wide range of small stores, and Burlington’s L.L. Bean and Macy’s Department Stores. But the Church Street Marketplace is more than just a collection of shops and outdoor cafes. It is a unique experience that you simply can’t miss if you are visiting downtown Burlington. It is a happening place to people watch and is currently the home of the only Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Scoop Shop in town. It is the most successful conversion of a city street to a pedestrian mall in the United States today. And it saved downtown Burlington from becoming a ghost town like a lot of other downtowns in the northeast when suburban shopping malls started popping up at interstate exits late in the twentieth century.
